| Maintenance/Operations/High Availability/Disaster Recovery |
Every environment is different, but best-practices remain the same. The term "best-practice" has come under fire recently for being a way for
consultants to persuade clients to implement changes without the consultant understanding them.
As it says on our home page, we're different. We've all worked with SQL Server for many years, and Paul even spent 9 years designing SQL Server features
and writing SQL Server code. We really know what we're talking about and the advice we'll give you is from our own experience, not copying someone else's.
Are you working for a company where there's no designated DBA, or the DBA hasn't had any SQL Server training? Maybe the "DBA" is you... what we call an
"involuntary DBA". In these cases, it's very common to find SQL Server databases that are misconfigured, performing poorly, and susceptible to disaster
striking (e.g. no backups, no consistency checking, or no monitoring). Or you might be a seasoned DBA or IT Manager who wants some reassurance that you're
doing everything correctly with respect to your SQL Server databases. Or maybe someone tasked with updating a hih-availability strategy.
Whichever the case, we can help you.
We offer two remote audits that will save you a lot of time, money, and possibly even your job.
The first is a maintenance/operations audit. It takes the form of a detailed questionnaire and some simple scripts to collect data from your systems. Paul then
analyzes the data and produces a report with a list of recommendations, all with supporting explanations and links to further reading. This usually leads to further
questions, and discussions until your databases are in shape. Areas covered are: backup strategy, database settings, index maintenance, consistency checking, monitoring,
database physical layout, and more.
The second is a high-availability/disaster recovery audit. It takes the form of a detailed questionnaire plus analysis of any supporting information, like existing
disaster recovery plans. After potentiall extensive discussions with the technical staff, Paul then produces a report evaluating the current state of availability and
recovery preparedness, plus a list of recommendations, as described above. This audit can be tailored to any needs around strategy design and evaluation, and covers
RPO/RTO goals, backup strategy, testing strategy, disaster preparedness, high-availability technology choices, requirements analysis, and more.
Either or both of these audits can be used as a way to gain in-depth understanding of your environment and needs, and as the basis for further consulting and/or training. Best
of all, this can all be done remotely - over email and the phone.
